The Queen of Seguin

The story of the Historic Magnolia Hotel begins before there ever was a hotel. In 1839, original Texas Ranger and Seguin co-founder James Campbell built one of the community's earliest log cabins on this very site near Walnut Springs. Constructed from timbers originally intended for a protective stockade for the early settlers, the cabin became an important landmark in the young community. After Campbell's tragic death in 1840, fellow Texas Ranger and future Seguin mayor Joseph F. Johnson purchased the property. Then in 1847, established the original three-room Magnolia Frontier Inn and Seguin's first stagecoach stop. Just a few years later, Dr. William Read expanded the frontier inn into an impressive two-story hotel that still stands today. His expansion transformed the Magnolia into one of the most prestigious and longest-operating hotels in Texas, affectionately known as the "Queen of Seguin." It had 16 upscale guest rooms, an elegant tavern, a spacious restaurant, and a large livery stable. For decades, it served as the social, political, and commercial heart of the growing community.

For nearly two centuries, the Magnolia Hotel has witnessed the story of Seguin unfold. Stagecoaches delivered weary travelers to its doors, Texas Rangers and frontier settlers found rest within its walls, and generations of prominent citizens gathered here as the city grew around it. Legendary Captain John "Jack" Coffee Hays celebrated his marriage to Susan Calvert within the original frontier inn, future Governor John Ireland welcomed the arrival of the railroad from its balcony, and countless guests passed through its doors during Seguin's years as a bustling crossroads of commerce and travel. Today, carefully restored and recognized as one of Texas' most treasured historic landmarks, the Historic Magnolia Hotel once again welcomes overnight guests, inviting visitors to experience not only one of Texas' most celebrated historic hotels, but also one of the very places where the story of Seguin itself began.
