Many years ago, my parents traveled to visit Texas from another state. My mom grew up in Florida and my stepdad was from Buffalo, NY. She had a chill summer vibe laced with southern hospitality. He was a Vietnam Vet/ex-cop, accent, and all.
They would not stop talking about this perfect Texas BBQ they believed was waiting for them. I soon realized they had an imaginary view of what a Texas BBQ should look like. They were looking for something like a meal from Fred Flintstone's cartoon. Nothing quite met their imagined standards. We tried a few places that weekend of their visit but never found the “Real Texas BBQ” they were hoping for.

Several years later, our family made its way to the heart-warming small town of Seguin, Texas. Here we found a culinary community that puts this town on the map. In this hidden corner of the Lone Star State, the art of barbecue thrives. Connecting the modern present day with cherished memories of the past. Owners Ernest Servantes and Dave Kirkland strive to make Seguin proud. I can confidently say we are. Sometimes you wonder why there is so much hype. And if you are like me, you can hesitate to jump on board when you see a line that circles the block. Add to it that they serve until they run out of food and I was afraid I would be disappointed. But, these guys started in competitions and are keeping that winning spirit going. Burnt Bean Company ranked No. 4 in the Texas Monthly BBQ list and have been featured on Texas Eats, The Texas Bucket List, The Daytripper, and more. Located inside a renovated historic downtown building, the restaurant has rustic warmth mixed with a bit of a hip industrial vibe. The BBQ, sides, and dessert are all well worth the wait, and the incredible service was the icing on top. When you visit Seguin, you might as well jump in line and start a new tradition of hitting up the best Texas BBQ spots. Afterward, take a stroll down the sidewalk and visit the many shops along the way.

Johnny's Bar-B-Que

Johnny’s was one of my greatest surprises when I first came to Seguin. At first glance on a day it was closed, I thought, “What is that little place about?” I continued to pass it many times and almost always peered over the crowd of cars jumbled in front of the building. The quaint little blue building with its mural of the Texas wild would catch my eye! Huge Texas-sized trucks were parked in the grass across the street. I told myself that this had to be the secret spot all the locals know about and put it on my list to give it a try. Finally, my friend mentioned he likes to go there several times a month for their amazing catfish. So, I had to give it a try. Well, Johnny’s doesn’t disappoint. It is charming, friendly, and consistent, with all the Seguin hometown family-run vibes. They offer several selections of mouth-watering Barbecue, home-cooked entrees, and sides. I was told that next time, I must try the pie. Does anyone feel like meeting up for some BBQ and pie?

Step back in time to Davila's BBQ. This place is a legend. They have been serving Seguin since 1959. This family-run joint carries on the traditions of Central Texas BBQ. Infusing their recipes with a dash of nostalgia. As you enter the unassuming brick building, the welcoming aroma of mesquite smoke envelopes you, setting the stage for a memorable dining experience. From their melt-in-your-mouth sausage to their perfectly seasoned beef ribs, and don’t even get me started on Brisket grilled cheese! Davila's BBQ embodies the spirit of Seguin, where timeless flavors and a warm, friendly ambiance reign supreme.
